Therapeutic Foster Care Parent/Family Responsibilities and Qualifications

As a foster parent with AMHC, you will have access to comprehensive services for the children in your care including psychiatric and psychological evaluations, medication management, therapy, family support, substance abuse treatment, and 24-hour emergency and crisis services/support. Foster parents are expected to work as part of a treatment team and follow through on treatment recommendations, based on the individual needs of each child. They are responsible to provide consistent and realistic discipline and guidance that is age appropriate. Foster parents must have the ability to understand and show acceptance towards children’s birth families and commit to promote the reunification of families and permanency for children.
Qualifications of foster parents include:

  • May be single, partnered, or married
  • Rent or own their home
  • Must be at least 21 years of age
  • Must be in good physical and mental health
  • Must enjoy working with children
  • Possess effective positive parenting skills
  • Be creative and flexible
  • Possess and willingness to work with birth parents, service providers/agencies
  • Must be committed and enjoy challenges
  • Must provide a nurturing family environment
  • Transportation to activities and appointments
